WATER GARDEN & DUCK POND
TROTTISCLIFFE, KENT
We got the chance to renovate a popular duck pond in the village of Trottiscliffe. The bank behind the pond had been left to overgrow with masses of bramble and the new homeowners wanted to have a water garden to enjoy. The bank was extremely steep so we designed a two-tier terrace to give a walkway along the duck pond edge rising to a top-level with seating areas. A small stream and large waterfall cut across the terrace grass path to give sights and sounds of running water.
After the pond was dredged for masses of sediment and the bank as cleared of scrub we terraced the slope. The pond had a dilapidated duck house so we replaced it with a floating duck house with multi compartments for nesting ducks. We also created several islands for the ducks that had no protection from the foxes. The duck and moorhen population has risen sharply and it is great to return and see the ducklings and nests full of eggs on the islands we created. The banks were planted with appropriate plants for the location from pond edge marginals and wetland plants on the low bank and alpine and rockery loving plants on the top bank.
The Waterfall and stream split the garden in two and can be crossed on a bespoke cast-iron bridge. The stream is split by three waterfalls the cascade down the terraces. We created herb planted steps to emit amazing scents as you transcend to the lower walkway. Each pool is inhabited by water plants that help with natural filtration and are also home to a myriad of aquatic life The oxygenating waterfall will help the duck pond maintain a healthy biological state and allow more life to thrive in this old village favourite duck pond.
